A Vertical NFT Hydroponic System in Sitakundu was recently installed by Drip Irrigation BD Ltd. (DIBL) in Sitakundu, Chattogram, providing an excellent example of cultivating lettuce and tomatoes in a small space. Funded and implemented by DAE Sitakundu, this project has ensured higher yields in smaller areas, opening new horizons for modern agriculture.

📍 Project Details
This project was installed in Sitakundu, Chattogram district, under the supervision of DAE Sitakundu and with technical support from DIBL. Its primary objective was to demonstrate the advantages and effectiveness of modern farming methods in rural areas. The Vertical NFT Hydroponic System in Sitakundu was designed to ensure maximum production in compact spaces.
❓ Challenges Faced by Farmers
The main challenges for farmers (and those with limited space in urban areas) in Sitakundu using traditional farming methods included land scarcity, difficulties in producing quality vegetables, and limited management opportunities. Often, there isn’t enough space for cultivation in urban areas or home yards. Additionally, the availability of good quality soil or water can also be a problem.
🔧 DIBL’s Solution: NFT Hydroponic System, Sitakundu
To address these challenges, DIBL installed a Vertical NFT Hydroponic System in Sitakundu. This system utilized a steel frame, PVC pipes, and special cups arranged vertically. This made it possible to efficiently and beautifully cultivate crops like lettuce and tomatoes in a small area of 0.05 decimal (approximately 2 square meters). The entire setup is mounted on a ‘Movement Frame’, which allows for easy relocation when needed.
In this method, nutrient solution is used instead of soil. DIBL supplied a special ABC Hydroponic Solution for this project, which ensures all necessary nutrients for the plants. Agriculturist Md. Riaz Uddin, Regional Manager, Chittagong Branch, served as the site manager and successfully oversaw the project.
📈 Project Results and Achievements
This NFT Hydroponic System in Sitakundu project delivered positive results in a short period. Although the cultivation period is shown as one day (15/11/2023), this actually refers to the installation and initial setup date of this type of system. At the end of a full cultivation cycle, the project generated an approximate revenue of ৳27,000, which is a significant achievement for a 0.05 decimal plot of land. This proves that good profits can be achieved even on limited land using modern technology.

🔬 What Research Says
Globally, hydroponic farming, especially the NFT (Nutrient Film Technique) system, is gaining increasing popularity. According to agricultural scientists, hydroponic methods can achieve 20-50% higher yields compared to traditional soil-based farming. Research published in the Agricultural Water Management journal shows that this method uses 30-60% less water. The main reason is that water is reusable, and wastage due to evaporation and leaching is significantly reduced. (Source: Agricultural Water Management)

❓ Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
❓ Q1: What is an NFT Hydroponic System in Sitakundu?
Answer: An NFT Hydroponic System is a type of hydroponic method where plant roots flow over a thin film of nutrient solution. In vertical systems like this Sitakundu project, it helps in producing more crops in less space.
❓ Q2: Does hydroponic farming use less water?
Answer: Yes, studies have shown that hydroponic methods use 30-60% less water compared to soil-based farming. This is because water can be reused repeatedly, and evaporation is reduced.
❓ Q3: Is it possible to grow many crops in a small space?
Answer: Absolutely! Using modern methods like the Vertical NFT Hydroponic System in Sitakundu, it is possible to successfully cultivate crops like lettuce and tomatoes in a tiny 0.05 decimal area, as demonstrated by this project.
❓ Q4: What type of crops thrives in this system?
Answer: Generally, leafy greens such as lettuce, spinach, and small fruits like tomatoes and strawberries yield very well in this NFT system. In this Sitakundu project, lettuce and tomatoes were successfully cultivated.
❓ Q5: How does DIBL help in establishing such projects?
Answer: DIBL assists farmers by installing modern agricultural technologies like NFT Hydroponic Systems, drip irrigation, and fertigation systems, and by supplying necessary equipment. They provide appropriate solutions and technical support. You can find more information on their website.
❓ Q6: Is the initial cost for hydroponic farming high?
Answer: The one-time cost of setting up a hydroponic system can be somewhat higher. However, in the long run, it proves profitable due to savings in water, fertilizer, and labor, as evidenced by the ৳27,000 revenue from this NFT Hydroponic System in Sitakundu project.
